booking information

Please note that there must be a caregiver accompanying the child or children, one adult per one or two children. This is due to the 75 stairs and the steep nature of the winding staircase. You must be comfortable in a confined space, as the Dome Room is quite small and can hold a maximum of 18 people, including the astronomers.

If the weather is cloudy, windy or wet, we will unfortunately have to CANCEL the session, sorry. If this is the case, you will let you know by both email and text on the afternoon of your upcoming session. You will receive a refund.

The telescope is an antique, made in 1860 in England. If during your session the weather becomes windy or rainy, we will need to close the dome as the telescope will get damaged. If this happens, the astronomers will do an illustrated talk in the Exhibition Space on the first floor.

Experience stargazing from the Observatory Tower (1896) at The Arts Centre. Climb 75 steps and view the Southern Sky through the Victorian-era Townsend Teece Telescope, under the guidance of Townsend astronomers from the University of Canterbury during this short, informative 30-minute session.
